Man, I can only get 4 1/2 feet! Very impressive, but I kind of thought the jump was like a warmup before he power lifted some 500 pounds or something, haha.

There's a high jumping style called scissors where you remain upright and land on your feet. That's pretty much what he's doing, allthough the best athletes can reach almost seven feet ...
